Vision

Ether exists so teams stop rebuilding dashboard chrome for every job. A dashboard in Ether is an instrument, not a report: it should make change perceptible, decisions faster, and complexity quieter.

This is the north star for Brand. Everything else in this system — principles, tone, terminology, assets, and the guidelines that follow — exists to keep that instrument honest.

Why we exist

Teams keep reinventing dashboard surfaces. The result is a pile of templates that look the same and say nothing. Monitoring walls, analytics cockpits, admin consoles, and product ops boards all need the same craft — density that can breathe, state that can be trusted, motion that explains change — and they keep forking it instead.

Ether is the shared language so those jobs can be composed without forking the brand.

Who it is for

Ether is for the people who build and operate dashboard products:

Assumption: dashboards are desktop-primary instruments with a compact companion layout. The operator is often under time pressure. Chrome that competes with data is a defect.

What a dashboard is here

Not a report. Not a marketing page with charts. An instrument.

Live, stale, empty, and error are first-class states. Completeness is never faked.

Values

  1. Signal over spectacle — Attention is the scarce resource. Spend it on the metric, the delta, and the alert.
  2. Respect for the operator — People come here to act, often under time pressure. Do not narrate, hype, or blame.
  3. One language, many jobs — Compose, don't fork. A monitoring wall and an admin console share primitives, not a template.
  4. Access as a default — WCAG 2.2 AA is the floor, not a phase. An instrument only some people can read is broken.
  5. Honesty of state — Live, stale, empty, error. Never fake completeness.

What we are not

Status

Brand + Guidelines are the current layer. Foundations (tokens, type, color application, motion primitives in code) come next. Until then, this vision is the test: if a surface does not make change perceptible, decisions faster, and complexity quieter, it is not Ether.
